My wife's Softley/Softly ancestors have remained in north west Norfolk since the late 18th century. We are guessing that her 4th great-grandfather was William Softley born around 1764 in Docking with Southmore, Norfolk. He married Jane Rix in Docking on 9 March1789. We believe they may have been the parents of William Softly, an ag lab, born 1791-94 in Stanhoe. He married
Ann Grimes
on 13 Oct 1819 in Dersingham and there they had a son,
Thomas, born ca. 1822.
Thomas Softly, also an ag lab, married Mary Anne Bulman 6 Apr 1848. They had three children we know of - Eleanor, William George (b 11 Oct 1850) and James Edward (b 8 Sep 1853) - all in Dersingham.
James Edward Softley, farm manager, married Mahalah Ransome on 25 Nov T W Softley1875 and they had 8 children - Edward, Jemima (b ca. 1874), William (b ca, 1875), Thirza J (b 1876), Thomas William (b 30 Dec 1877), James E (b Jan 1881), Maryann (b 1882) and Elizabeth (b ca. 1882, dressmaker) - before he died from tetanus, pricking his finger on a holly bush.
Thomas William Softley, also a farm manager, married May Kemp on 22 Oct 1903 in Ringstead and had 5 children - Edward George, Jack, Harry William, James and my wife's mother Betty May.

I believe that my 6x great-grandfather was Robert Softley, who was married to Alice. They had two daughters, Mary, c1757 and Alice, c1759 in Whickham, Co. Durham. I suspect they were also the parents of John and Robert. John's eldest son was named Robert and his eldest daughter Alice, which reinforces my belief.
John Softley was my 5 x great-grandfather and was probably born about 1745. He married Elizabeth Clennell (c1746) 30 October 1775 in Whickham. Their children were Robert (c.1777), John (c.1779), Michael (c1781) and Alice (c1786).

My grandmother was Jane Softley, born 8.6.1854 in Bishopwearmouth South, the younger daughter of Michael Softley, born 8.11.1819 and his first wife Amelia Willey, born 31.12.1819, daughter of Michael Willey and Jane Stoddart. Amelia had two children before Jane, Catherine, born about 1845, who I am unable to trace, and John born 1.12.1847. She died of puerperal - i.e. childbirth - fever on 4.11.1857. I do not believe the baby, named Peter, survived.
Jane married William Thompson on 11.11.1875 in the Parish of Hendon, Bishopwearmouth. They had 12 children only 6 of whom survived infancy. In 1886 Jane and William with the only three of seven children born prior to that date, Sara Jane, born 7.10.1876, Henrietta Softley born 24.9.1881 and my father William, born 1.9.1885, emigrated to Australia on the SS Almora. They stayed briefly in Brisbane before travelling to Ballarat, Victoria. Here their remaining five children were born, the three survivors being Frederick John Stanley born 30.1.1889, Jonathan Horne, born 18.4.1890 and Clarence Russell Softley, born 21.7.1894. Jane died in Melbourne on 11.8.1940.

Henrietta Ameila Softley was christened January 27 1856 at Briton Ferry, Glamorgan, Wales.
She was the last born child of John Softley and Anne Seatree who married 15 April 1845 at Hexham. John, we believe, was the son of John Softley and Jane Bell who married 22 June 1801 in Sunderland, Durham. Henrietta 's other siblings were: Margaret Jane born circa 1845, Joseph Bell born circa 1848, John Ellery born circa 1850, Frederick James born circa 1852 and Elizabeth Ann born circa 1854. John Softley was a shipping clerk who obviously travelled as the last four children were all born in Wales. Henrietta married William Wright from East Rudham Norfolk on 8 July 1873 and they had 5 children. William was killed in a tugboat explosion on the River Tyne aboard the "Nimrock" in August 1882. Henrietta, who then married Edward Brady in Scotland in 1883 before emigrating to Australia with her children and new husband, was my Gt Gt Grandmother.
